Black and White: A Colorful Look At Life on the Autism Spectrum

Black and White"You do realize people don't think the way you do?" My psychologist is looking at me over the rim of his glasses with both concern and disbelief... - excerpt from Black and White: A Colorful Look At Life on the Autism Spectrum

Black and White is a unique and refreshing look at life, love, and parenthood on the autism spectrum. Diagnosed in her late 30s with Asperger's Syndrome, an Autism Spectrum Disorder, Salas talks openly to readers about growing up on a spectrum she didn't know existed until the diagnosis of her son in 2008. Inspiring and at times moving, Salas's firsthand accounts of friendship, marriage, and parenting kids both on and off the spectrum are humorous and enlightening.

"I wanted Black and White to tell a different story, a positive one," says Salas. "It had to be about life on the autism spectrum – not about the disorder itself."

I have learned a great deal from Ron Hedgcock. Those who have attended my seminars will have heard several of his quotations describing his experiences and insights into Asperger's Syndrome. His autobiography is unusual in that it covers seven decades and is one of the first to describe the aging process and Asperger's Syndrome. He has a wicked sense of humour; and in describing his thoughts, emotions and experiences, Ron is forthright and at times confronting. His descriptions are authentic and will be endorsed by other adults who have the Syndrome. Ron is a wise elder in the 'tribe' of people with AS; and his eloquent autobiography will be a source of explanation and insight for those who are discovering and exploring the world as perceived and experienced by someone who has Asperger's Syndrome.

Some Review Comments –

'Ron's book brings a personal perspective to Asperger's Syndrome, and its impact on intimacy, love and relationships. The information in this book is invaluable for anyone who lives with an adult with Aspergers Syndrome.'

Dr Isabelle Henault, Author of Aspergers Syndrome and Sexuality.

'Ron's reflections on 'living life' as an Aspergian are all so true to life as many of us older Aspergians know it. .... All of it is exceptionally charming and exceptionally revealing biography.'

William D Loughman, Geneticist and retired Laboratory Director.

'You just take us on your journey, and what a beautiful journey it is. Thankyou for saying what others have not said and most importantly needed to be said, from 'our' end of the Spectrum, with such style and grace.'

Linda Newland, Moderator ASPIRES Aspergers Internet Support List.
